Origin and history

The Spada Hotel is an iconic building located in the city of Nancy, in Meurthe-et-Moselle, in the Grand Est region. Built in the 18th century, it is distinguished by its characteristic architecture of this period and its location in the heart of the Ville-Veille district, at 37 rue de la Source. This monument illustrates Nancy's historical and architectural heritage, marked by the influence of local elites and subsequent industrial activities.

In the 18th century, during the reign of Leopold I of Lorraine, the Spada Hotel was first the residence of the Marquis of Spada, then became the Han Hotel, belonging to the Countess of Bassompierre. These aristocratic owners reflect Nancy's social and political importance at that time, the capital city of the Duchy of Lorraine. The building thus bears witness to the lifestyles and networks of influence of the Lorraine nobility.

In the 19th century, the hotel underwent a major transformation by welcoming the Dehaye-Zimmermann knitting factory. This reconversion illustrates Nancy's economic development, marked by industrialisation and the development of knitwear, a key sector in the region. The door to the hotel street, remarkable for its style, was classified as historic monuments by decree of 13 March 1944, highlighting its heritage value.

Today, the Spada Hotel remains an architectural testimony to the historic transitions of Nancy, between aristocratic heritage and industrial revolution. Its partial inscription in historic monuments makes it a key part of the heritage of the country, to be discovered in the historic district of Ville-Veille.
