Origin and history

Hotel de Suffren is an iconic mansion located at 40 Cours Mirabeau, in the city of Aix-en-Provence, in the heart of the Bouches-du-Rhône department. This monument, inscribed with historical monuments since 25 March 1929, illustrates the civil architecture of Aix of the 17th and 18th centuries. Its history is marked by successive owners, some of whom have left a notable mark in local or national history.

The hotel changed hands several times, notably belonging to Esprit d'Arnaud in 1648, then to Louis de Suffren in 1674. In the 19th century, it passed between those of Sextius de Forbin d'Oppede in 1816, before being acquired in 1902 by Edouard Honoré Jourdan, professor of law at the Faculty of Aix-en-Provence until his death in 1936. The famous military figure, the baili de Suffren, spent his childhood there, adding a historical and memorial dimension to the site.

The building embodies the prestige of Aixian private hotels, often linked to influential noble or bourgeois families. Its inscription as a historic monument in 1929 underscores its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in the social and cultural history of the region. Today, there remains a testimony of the lifestyles and social hierarchies of the Ancien Régime and of the 19th century in Provence.
