Origin and history
The Bergheim City Hall, built between 1762 and 1767, replaces a previous building cited in 1377. Its architecture reflects the classic 18th century style: a rectangular stoneware and masonry building with a three-span central forebody. The low arch entrance door is flanked by false windows, while a cast iron balcony adorns the first floor. The curvilinear pediment, adorned with Bergheim weapons (partly staked), bears the date 1767. A statue of Justice, initially armed with a sword and a scale, crowns the square campanile.
The main façade, facing the Place du Docteur-Pierre-Walter, features sandstone-angle chains and segment arch windows. At the rear, a door in full hanger and two doors in segment arch complete the elevation. The interior preserves an original wooden rotating staircase with balusters, 18th century ground doors, and sandstone floor. The building, registered with the Historical Monuments since 1929, underwent restorations, especially in 1994 for its interior. The statue of Justice was changed: the balance, initially in the left hand, was moved to the right, while the sword disappeared.
The campanile houses three bells whose inscriptions remain indecipherable. The hipped roof, with modern skylights, and the protected elements (facade and roof) highlight its heritage importance. The city hall embodies Bergheim's civic history, from its medieval origins to its current role as a municipal symbol.
The sources also mention technical details, such as the location accuracy (estimated at 5/10) and the exact address: 3 place of Doctor-Pierre-Walter, 68750 Bergheim. Owned by the municipality, the building remains a central place for the inhabitants, although its accessibility (visits, rental) is not specified in the documents consulted.
