Origin and history
The Town Hall of Charleville-Mézières is a historic monument located in the heart of the city, on Ducale Square. Built in the 17th century, it embodies the civil architecture of this period and bears witness to the administrative importance of Charleville-Mézières, founded at the beginning of Henry IV's reign as a new city. Its central location, on a square designed according to the urbanist principles of the time, reflects its political and symbolic role in the organization of the city.
The building consists of two contiguous buildings, located at numbers 1 and 3 of Place Ducale. These two parts were classified as Historic Monument on separate dates: the building of 3 Place Ducale by order of 10 October 1942, and that of 1 Place Ducale by decree of 12 August 1945. Today, the City Hall remains a key place for municipal life, hosting local institutions and participating in city centre animation.
The heritage protection of the building underscores its architectural and historical value. Owned by the commune, it illustrates the civil heritage of the Grand Est region, formerly Champagne-Ardenne. Although the sources do not specify the details of its construction or its possible sponsors, its ranking reflects its importance in the urban history of Charleville-Mézières, a city marked by its ducal heritage and its development in the seventeenth century.
