Origin and history
The City Hall of Tournus is a public building built during the 4th quarter of the 18th century. Located in the municipality of Tournus, Saône-et-Loire, it embodies the civil architecture of this period, marked by classical influences and a desire to modernize local institutions. The building, owned by the municipality, was partially protected by measures of classification and registration under the Historical Monuments.
The main façade of the Town Hall was classified by order of 6 May 1933, while the rest of the building, with the exception of that part, was inscribed by order of 28 February 1927. These protections reflect the heritage importance of the building, both for its architecture and its role in municipal life. The location of the monument at 4 Rue des Lambrois is documented with a priori satisfactory accuracy, according to the criteria of the Merimée base.
At the end of the 18th century, the town halls in Burgundy, as elsewhere in France, served as an administrative and political centre for the communes. They symbolized municipal authority and were often the meeting place for local decisions. Tournus, a town along the Saône River, had a strategic position for trade and commerce, strengthening the central role of its city hall in the management of public affairs.
