Origin and history

The town hall of Étain, located in Place Jean-Baptiste-Rouillon, was originally built between 1780 and 1787 under the administration of François Verdun, mayor of the city. This first building replaced an old common house aligned on National Street. The architect Jean-Olry Laurent, then François Mercier from 1782, directed the works, marking the building with a classical style with a doric column vestibule and an ionic festive hall.

During the First World War, the city hall suffered extensive destruction. Its reconstruction, carried out from 1922 to 1926 by architect Joseph Hornecker, respected the original ordinance of the facade while adding decorative elements such as a carved pediment and two egg-eyes. These changes, combined with the restoration of architectural orders, allowed us to preserve the spirit of the eighteenth century while integrating traces of the upheavals of the twentieth century.

Ranked a historic monument in 2002, the building today embodies both the administrative legacy of the Old Regime and the scars of modern conflicts. Its protection covers the entire building, emphasizing its central role in the urban and memorial history of the city of Tin, marked by wars and successive reconstructions.
