Origin and history

The city hall of Montreuil replaces the former 19th century town hall, built by Claude Naissant. The current building, designed between 1931 and 1935 by communal architect Florent Nanquette (1884-1955), embodies the rationalist style of the inter-war period. Its U-shaped plan, centered on a campanile, and its neat interior spaces (lambing, mosaics, ironwork) reflect a desire to combine modernity and prestige. The party hall, initially on two levels, partially lost its original elements in the 1990s, but the public hall and the salons retained their original decoration.

Several works of art adorn the pieces of art, protected as historical monuments: paintings by Charles Fouqueray (counsel hall), Georges Parent (fête hall) and Claude-Charles Bourgonnier (marriage hall), registered since 1986, as well as a painting by Paul Signac in the honorary staircase, classified since 1980. These elements underline the cultural role of the building, typical of the Franciscan city hotels of the time, such as those in Poissy or Boulogne-Billancourt, already protected.

The city hall, registered in full (excluding extensions of the 1960s) by decree of 18 November 2024, illustrates the architectural ambition of the municipalities during the inter-war period. Its location on Place Jean-Jaurès, in the heart of Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis), makes it a major civic and heritage symbol. The noble materials (mahogany, mosaics) and the wrought ironworks bear witness to artisanal know-how at the service of an innovative municipal project.
