Origin and history
The Hotel des Comptes de Mantes-la-Jolie, built in the 2nd quarter of the 16th century, is a limestone door of Vernon, decorated with two pilasters and a medallion representing a woman's head. This monument, classified in 1966, is the only vestige of a larger ensemble, now extinct. Originally, he linked the parvis of the college to the rue du Fort, and his name came from his proximity to the chamber of accounts, a room installed in 1285 by Queen Marie de Brabant on the floor of the gate of the Fort.
According to the municipal archives, the decision to build this gate was taken in 1536. It was originally to include a tabernacle with a statue of Notre-Dame, visible on both sides. In 1640, the city ordered the destruction of the adjacent building, considered to be all ruinous, to reuse its materials in the reconstruction of the city hall. The door, spared, however, suffered degradation during the French Revolution before being protected in the 20th century.
Today, the Hotel des Comptes is located in Place de l'Etape (or 4 rue du Fort), and remains owned by the municipality. Although most of its original decorations have disappeared, its architecture still bears witness to its historical role: a functional and symbolic urban door, linked to the medieval administration and religious life of Mantes-la-Jolie.
