Origin and history

The Hotel des Sires de Neuchâtel, also called Neufchastel, is an emblematic building located in Baume-les-Dames, in the Doubs department, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating mainly from the 15th century, it underwent changes in the 16th and 18th centuries. This monument, which has been listed as a historical monument since 1989, served as a "stay of passage" for the Sisters of Neufchâtel, who exercised their authority over the city and the local abbey. Today, it houses the Museum of the Sires of Neufchastel, which highlights the peasant and seigneurial life of the region.

The hotel's architecture is distinguished by a hexagonal tower with a screw staircase, vaulted caves of warheads dating from the 12th and 15th centuries, and a Renaissance garden decorated with 15th century interlacing. Protected elements include facades, roof, stair tower, cellars, and 18th-century fireplaces and panelling. The building, located in Place du Général de Gaulle, is partly owned by the municipality and partly private.

The museum offers an immersion in local history through scenes of everyday life, both peasant and seigneurial. The hotel thus illustrates the architectural and social evolution of Baume-les-Dames, while maintaining tangible traces of its medieval and classical past. Its inscription as a historic monument covers specific elements, reflecting its heritage and cultural importance.
