Origin and history

The Hôtel des Taillades, also known as the Hotel de Bassinet, was built at the beginning of the eighteenth century in Avignon by Pierre-Dominique Bassinet d'Augard. In 1705 he obtained permission to build an arch over an alley to connect two parts of his future home, provided that the public passage was preserved. Construction was not completed in 1710, and the building remained in the Bassinet family until its sale in 1771.

The hotel was acquired in 1771 by Joseph-Marie de Monier, lord of the Taillades, whose family kept it until 1869. Among his notable occupants was Abbé Alexandre-Joseph de Bassinet (1733-1813), born in this hotel, who was a vicar, historian and royalist agent imprisoned under Napoleon. Dr. Monier des Taillades, owner of the Second Empire, promoted remedies such as Yrroé.

Ranked a historic monument in 1932 for its facade and vault, the hotel illustrates the civil architecture of the 18th century Avignonnais. Its arched passage, designed to connect two wings while maintaining public traffic, bears witness to the urban constraints of the time.
