Origin and history
The Hôtel-Dieu de Bourg-en-Bresse, also known as the Bourg-en-Bresse Hospital, is a hospital building located in the city of Bourg-en-Bresse, France. Its construction, begun in 1782, is part of the 4th quarter of the 18th century. The plans were designed by architect Pierre-Adrien Pâris, while Gaspard Chauverêche was responsible for managing the project. The building, organized around a cloister and surmounted by a dome, houses in its southern wing an apothecary turned into a museum, testifying to its historical medical use.
The building has been partially listed as historical monuments since 1947, a recognition that includes its façade on the boulevard, chapel and staircase of honour. Located in the department of Ain, it illustrates the evolution of hospital infrastructure on the eve of the French Revolution. Its architecture, marked by the classical rigour of the period, also reflects the hygienist and functional concerns of the period.
Today, the Hôtel-Dieu remains a symbol of local heritage, combining medical history and architecture. Its apothecary, classified and open to the public, offers an overview of pharmaceutical practices of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The building, owned by the commune, continues to play a cultural and memorial role in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
