Origin and history
The Hotel du Bât, also known as Hotel du Bol d'Or, is a private hotel located in the city centre of Vitré, 10 rue d'Embas. Built in 1513, it is one of the few stone buildings of the city before the seventeenth century. Its architecture combines local materials such as the slate shale and Vitré sandstone, with remarkable elements such as a stone screw staircase and a small wooden cabinet overlooking the entrance.
This hotel served as an important relay on the road from Le Mans to Rennes, demonstrating its role in the trade of the time. A mark on the upstairs chimney suggests that it belonged to a merchant. It was listed as historic monuments on November 5, 1926, recognizing its heritage value.
The protected elements include the facade and roof, thus preserving part of Vitré's architectural history. The hotel illustrates the style of private hotels of the Breton Renaissance, while reflecting the economic activity of the region at this time. Its location in the city centre and its state of conservation make it a valuable testimony to the local heritage.
