Origin and history

The Hôtel du Mouton Blanc is an emblematic building of Mont-Saint-Michel, located in the Manche department in Normandy. Dated from the 14th century, it illustrates the medieval architecture of this world heritage town. Originally, its exact function is not specified in the sources, but its style suggests a residential or artisanal use, typical of the buildings of the Grande-Rue, main artery of the Abbey.

The building, transformed into a hotel for travellers in 1830, adopted a tourist vocation when Mont-Saint-Michel became a popular destination. In 1921, the sign on the façade was named after alliaume, the owner of the period. This period also marked its partial classification to historical monuments (1928), protecting its facades and roofs, as well as its adjoining outbuildings. Today, the hotel combines 3 star hotels (21 rooms) and restaurants under the name of Auberge du Mouton Blanc, perpetuating its welcoming role.

The hotel's architecture, preserved despite centuries, reflects successive adaptations to meet modern needs while maintaining its historical character. The elements protected since 1928 (cadastre 68 and 69) bear witness to this duality between heritage and contemporary function. The terrace of the hostel, for example, offers a view of a site where centuries of religious history, local life and tourist attraction have been mingling.
