Origin and history

Hotel du Petit Louvre is a private hotel located in Troyes, in the Aube department, in the Grand Est region. Built around a central courtyard, it was erected between the 13th and 20th centuries, with major architectural elements dating from the 16th century. His name refers to the Louvre de Paris, symbol of power, and he is distinguished by its location on the Seine, at the corner of the streets Linard Gontier, Boucherat and Montée Saint-Pierre. The building includes a tower rebuilt between 1988 and 1989 on the foundations of an ancient 13th-century tower, built on Gallo-Roman remains. A wooden part marks the location of the old city walls.

The site also houses remarkable elements such as a three-wheeled well, an Italian loggia and a skylight, all dating back to the 16th century. The hotel has had various functions over the centuries: canonical house welcoming ecclesiasticals such as Louis Budé in 1501 or Bishop Hennequin in 1517, residence of Marshal Charles de Choiseul in the 17th century, then post office relay held by the Bourliet de la Prairie family after 1789. These transformations reflect its importance in Troyes' political, religious and economic life, especially as a place of passage for influential figures in French history.

The Hôtel du Petit Louvre, a historic monument in 1986, is now owned by the municipality of Troyes. It houses the administrative direction and the public service of the Museum Pole of the city museums, while its spaces still bear witness to its rich architectural and historical past. The presence of the three stone house, dated 1753, and the traces of the old fortifications recall the temporal stratification of the site, between medieval heritage and modern adaptations.
