Origin and history

Hotel Gauthier de Sibert is a private hotel built on the edge of the 16th and 17th centuries, located in the town of Tonnerre, in the department of Yonne. This monument illustrates the civil architecture of the late Renaissance in Burgundy, with decorative elements characteristic of the region, as evidenced by the cartridges carved on its facade.

According to historical sources, this building was spared by the great fire that ravaged Tonnerre in 1556, making it a rare witness of that time. An inscription on a window lintel also shows that an underground cult was celebrated there in 1793, during the revolutionary period, reflecting the religious tensions of the time. These details underline its importance both architectural and historical.

The hotel was registered as historic monuments by order of 14 December 2005. Today, it belongs to the commune of Tonnerre and is located at 20 rue Jean-Garnier. Its facade, decorated with typical sculptures from the 16th century Yonne, and its turbulent history, make it a remarkable heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
