Origin and history

The Hotel Gauthier is one of the emblematic houses of Locronan, a Breton village ranked among the most beautiful villages in France. Built in the 16th and 17th centuries, it embodies the civil architecture of this period, with facades and roofs protected since 1926. The building, renovated between 1830 and 1866, is part of a preserved urban complex, dominated by the Church's square and its communal well, a symbol of medieval and modern collective life.

The Place de Locronan, the historic heart of the village, is surrounded by 16th and 17th century houses, reflecting the past prosperity linked to the Breton roof industry. The Gauthier Hotel, although transformed in the 19th century, retains architectural elements characteristic of its era, as evidenced by its classification as Historic Monuments. This heritage illustrates the central role of public squares in the social and economic organization of small Breton cities.

The facades and roofs of the Gauthier Hotel (Cadastre I 84 to 86) were classified by decree of 30 November 1926, highlighting their heritage value. The building, located in 222 Church Square, contributes to the authenticity of an exceptional urban setting, where religious, artisanal and domestic history blend together. Its location, near the communal well, recalls the importance of water points in structuring Breton villages before the arrival of modern networks.
