Origin and history

Hotel Goudard-Ruelle is an iconic mansion located in Aubenas, in the department of Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built during the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, this building is distinguished by its refined architecture, including its open portal, typical of the aristocratic achievements of this period. It embodies the prestige of the urban residences of the bourgeoisie or the local nobility under the Old Regime.

In the 20th century, the Goudard-Ruelle hotel housed the municipal library of Aubenas, thus playing a major cultural role in the city until the construction of a modern media library. This reallocation illustrates the adaptation of historical heritage to contemporary public needs. The building was recognized for its heritage value by being listed as historic monuments by order of 19 November 1963.

The protected elements of the hotel include all the facades and roofs, as well as an interior stone staircase with its ramp, characteristic of the exceptional 18th century craftsmanship. Today, the building, partly communal and partly private, remains an architectural and historical testimony of the city of Aubenas, accessible via Auguste-Bouchet street or the hospital street.
