Origin and history

Hotel Guthière is a private hotel in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, located at 6 rue Pierre-Bullet, behind the town hall. Built in 1780 under the direction of Joseph Métivier or François-Victor Perrard de Montreuil, it was commissioned by the famous chiseler Pierre Gouthière, known for his work on golden bronzes. After the bankruptcy of Gouthière in 1788, the hotel was sold to the notary Hercule Arnoult, who undertook architectural and decorative transformations.

The facade on the courtyard, marked by a perron framed with sphinx "return from Egypt", reflects the stylistic influences of the First Empire. Interior decorations, made after 1788, include stucco bas-reliefs and neo-pompian candelabras. In 1927, parts of the hotel, including the facades, the anti-chamber, the ground floor living room and a small living room on the first floor, were classified as historical monuments. Since 1981, the building has housed the Hector Berlioz Municipal Music Conservatory.

Architecturally, the Hotel Guthière is distinguished by its gate adorned with a bossed forebody and a door in the middle of the corner surmounted by a carved group representing two muses running Apollo. This decor, typical of neo-classicism, illustrates the taste of the epoch for Greco-Roman antiquity. The hotel is also notable for its history linked to major figures of handicrafts and the Parisian notariat of the eighteenth century.

Today, the Hotel Guthière remains a testimony of the Parisian private architecture of the transition between the 18th and 19th centuries. Its inscription in historic monuments and its current vocation as a conservatory make it both a heritage and a cultural place, accessible to the public as part of its musical activities.

Future

Since 1981, Hotel Guthière has been home to the Hector-Berlioz Municipal Music Conservatory.
