Origin and history
The Grimardias Hotel, also known as Hotel Dumas de Vault, is an emblematic building of the city of Maringues, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme. Built in 1782 by the architect Deval for the Grimardias family, this house illustrates the enrichment of some Auvergne families through trade with the Americas. Its architecture combines pre-existing elements of the 17th century with a neo-classical facade of Volvic stone, typical of the region.
Inside, the hotel preserves 18th-century décors, including stone fireplaces decorated with stucco, painted panels depicting mythological scenes, and painted doortops. These elements testify to the refinement and social status of its owners, while providing an overview of the art of living of local elites at the end of the Old Regime. The ensemble, including the rooms with their original decoration, was listed as historical monuments in 2002.
The Grimardias family, the hotel's sponsor, embodies the social ascent allowed by colonial commerce. Their residence, located at 10 rue Beaudet-Lafarge, symbolizes both their economic power and their integration into the local aristocracy. The frescoes and interior stuccos, as well as the staircase adorned with mythological canvases, underline their desire to compete with the homes of the traditional nobles.
The Grimardias Hotel is now protected for its architecture and decors, offering a rare testimony of the urban houses of notables in Auvergne on the eve of the French Revolution. Its registration in 2002 preserved an artistic and historical heritage, representative of a pivotal period for the region.
