Origin and history

The Hervieu de Pontlouis hotel, also named Hotel de Dey, is an emblematic building in the city centre of Carentan-les-Marais, in the Manche department. Located in Place Guillaume de Cerisay, near the church of Notre-Dame, it is located in a rich architectural environment, surrounded by other private hotels such as the hotel of Maillé. This monument illustrates the local urban heritage, with remarkable elements such as its entrance gate and facades.

A commemorative plaque indicates that Honoré de Balzac stayed there in 1836, during which time he wrote the new Requisitionnaire. This historical fact gives the hotel a literary dimension, in addition to its architectural interest. The building has been partially protected since 1990, with an inscription as historical monuments covering its portal, facades, roofs and 17th century wooden staircase cage.

The hotel's architecture reflects the characteristics of the bourgeois houses of the modern era, with interior and exterior elements preserved. Although the sources do not detail its initial use, its central location and style suggest an important social and residential role in the city. Today, there remains a testimony of the historical and cultural past of Carentan-les-Marais.
