Origin and history
The mansion at 52 rue Haute-Saint-Maurice in Chinon (Indre-et-Loire) is an emblematic 15th-century building marked by characteristic Gothic architecture. Its main house body, with sills and a polygonal staircase turret, reflects medieval constructive techniques. The rue Haute-Saint-Maurice, the major artery of Chinon in the Middle Ages, concentrates many houses of that time, reinforcing the historical context of the hotel.
In the 19th century, the hotel underwent notable changes: a new building was erected perpendicular to the original house, closing the courtyard by a wall pierced by a gate. These additions partially transform its structure, while preserving Gothic elements such as the cross windows and the sliding door of the stair tower. Together, with its two courtyards and turrets, bears witness to an architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
Ranked a historic monument in 1978 for its facades and roofs, the hotel illustrates Chinon's rich heritage. Its inscription protects remarkable details, such as the cushions of the bays, the pinnacles surrounding the Gothic gate, or the octagonal tower of the second courtyard. These elements underline its importance in the medieval urban landscape, between seigneurial habitat and adaptation to subsequent needs.
The available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, specify that the hotel preserves 15th, 17th and 18th century huisseries, thus mixing several periods. Its 19th-century gate and openwork railing staircase complete this architectural palimpsest. The exact location, confirmed by GPS coordinates and Insee code (37072), makes it a tangible landmark of the Tourangelle history.
