Origin and history

The Jubert de Brécourt Hotel is a private hotel built in the early 16th century in Rouen, replacing an ancient medieval building, the Hotel du Paon, which was built in 1240. In 1522, Henri Jubert, general of the Aides de Normandie, acquired the land for 1,400 pounds and undertook to erect a new house, built for 2,000 pounds. The building consists of a house body with gable on street, two inner courtyards, and an octagonal turret with a spiral staircase. The outbuildings and a gallery close the courtyard, while gardens extend to Rue des Fossés-Louis-VIII.

The hotel is structured on four levels: a cellar, a raised ground floor, a square floor and a divided attic. The communes are partly based on the Gothic cellars of the former hotel of Paon. In 1600, Henri Jubert sold the building to Jean-Jacques Romé, president of the Court of Accounts, for £11,500. After the Revolution, in 1791, the hotel was purchased by Jean-Baptiste Curmer and then divided into apartments.

Partly inscribed in the historic monuments in 1958, the Jubert Hotel in Brécourt retains remarkable elements such as its stair turret, its oriel and two re-used columns. Its architecture reflects the transition from Gothic to Renaissance, typical of the Rouenese mansions of that time.
