Origin and history
The Prost hotel, located 14bis rue Rouget-de-Lisle in Lons-le-Saunier (Jura), was built in the second half of the 19th century, during a period of accelerated urbanization of the neighborhood, stimulated by the opening of the station in 1862. Ordered by the banker Prost, the whole — including the hotel, a bank, stables and a garden — was completed in 1869. Its neo-classical architecture and interior décor, including a living room extended by a winter garden, reflect the bourgeois fascist of the era.
The garden, designed by landscape architect Henry Michel, preserves remarkable elements such as water and rock. Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 1 July 1996 (including the garden), the hotel illustrates the alliance between architectural heritage and 19th century garden art. Today owned by a private company, it bears witness to the economic influence of local bankers in the planning of Lons-le-Saunier.
The location of the hotel, close to the station, highlights its link with the development of railway infrastructure in Franche-Comté. The current cartographic accuracy is considered "passable" (note 5/10), while photographs licensed under Creative Commons (credit: Chabe01) document its current state. The exact address, confirmed by the Merimée base, attests to its anchoring in the city's historic urban fabric.
