Origin and history
The Hotel Mallet de Vendègre, located in Clermont-Ferrand in Puy-de-Dôme, is an urban house built in the 16th century. This monument illustrates the Renaissance civil architecture, with neat decorative elements such as bas-reliefs, prismatic mouldings and pinacles. The main door, decorated with a third-point arch, has three carved heads, one of which would represent a baili of Montferrand. The courtyard, accessible by Notre-Dame Street, is surmounted by an ogival vaulted gallery, while the arms of the Mallet family of Vendègre appear on a key vault.
The construction was attributed to Jean Pradal, lieutenant general at the royal lease between 1518 and 1538. This character, linked to the local judicial administration, marked the history of the building by his role as sponsor. The hotel, registered with the Historical Monuments in 1926, preserves traces of its noble past, like adjacent houses formerly dependent on the estate. Its location, between the streets of La Fontaine (now Jules-Guesde) and Notre-Dame, reflects the medieval and reborn urbanization of Clermont-Ferrand.
The protected elements include the sculpted door, the crosswall and heraldic decorations. Although the exact location is approximate (please note 5/10), the hotel remains a major architectural testimony of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its style combines late Gothic and Renaissance influences, typical of bourgeois or aristocratic homes of the period. Sources, such as Monumentum, highlight its heritage importance, despite the lack of details on its current use (visits, rental).
