Origin and history

The Milliarede Hotel is an emblematic civil building of the city of Nîmes, located at 31 Carnot Avenue, near the train station. Built in the early 20th century (between 1900 and 1907), it embodies the eclectic architecture of its time, mixing the influences of the Italian Renaissance and Art Nouveau touches, notably visible in its stained glass windows and ceramics on the façade. The building, designed by architect Louis Poinsot, is characterized by a square tower at the corner of two streets, richly decorated facades, and a bowl-window with stained glass windows decorated with fruit garlands and varnished ceramics.

The hotel was ordered by Mr Milliarede, lawyer and son of a rich textile industry (taffetassier), thus reflecting the bourgeois prosperity of Nîmes at the turn of the century. The building, which also includes a guard house and a fence wall, was listed as a historical monument by order of 5 December 2007. Its protected elements include facades, roofs, as well as the ground floor and the first floor of the mansion. Today, it belongs to a private company and remains a remarkable testimony of the Nîmes architectural heritage.

Representing the artistic trends of the 1900s, Hotel Milliarede illustrates the taste of the era for blends of styles and sumptuous decors. Its architecture also reflects the influence of local elites, often from industrial or legal families, who mark the city with their monumental achievements. The presence of ceramics and Art Nouveau stained glass also highlights the opening of Nîmes to modern currents, while anchoring the building in a revised classical tradition.
