Origin and history
The hotel Montrosier de la Vilatelle, located at 38 rue du Port in Clermont-Ferrand, was built in the middle of the 18th century for Antoine de Montrosier, then receiver of the sizes of the generality of Riom. This monument illustrates the refined civil architecture of the period, with a street façade and wings on courtyard partially enhanced in the 19th century. Its portal, topped by a gallery-balcony of Volvic stone, and its solid wood vantals of Rocaille style bear witness to exceptional craftsmanship.
Inside, the hotel retains remarkable decorative elements, including parquet floors, 18th-century woodwork and Rocaille style gypseries. These decorations, combined with the stairwell and its ironwork, reflect the aristocratic residences of the Old Regime. The building, partially classified and inscribed in the Historical Monuments since the 1990s, protects in particular the large living room of the Quatre-Saisons, the dining room, the boudoir and an alcove room, all with their original décor.
The hotel's location in the historic centre of Clermont-Ferrand and its state of conservation make it an example of the architectural heritage of the Auvergnat. Although its geographical accuracy is considered satisfactory (note 6/10), its exact address and protected elements are clearly documented in the Merimée database. The modifications made in the 19th century, such as the enhancement of the wings on courtyard, show an adaptation of the building to subsequent urban and aesthetic developments.
