Origin and history

The Hotel de Clermont-Ferrand, classified as Historical Monument, dates from the 17th century and illustrates the civil architecture of this period. Its main entrance is marked by a Louis XIII portal, the upper part of which, inscribed in a arch in the middle of a hanger, is decorated with triangular panels in fan. This gate gives access to a vaulted corridor leading to a rectangular inner courtyard, bordered by a wall supporting a small Tuscan column gallery. A semicircular turret reinforces the angle between this wall and the background facade, adding asymmetric elegance to the whole.

In the courtyard, a protruding forebody, supported by two arcades in basket coves, attracts attention. These arcades, with a projection key, highlight the careful work of the structural elements. The facades and roofs, as well as the ironworks on the floors and the stairwell, were protected by a registration order in 1989, recognizing their heritage value. The precise address, 14 Place du Terrail, is located in the heart of Clermont-Ferrand, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme.

The building reflects 17th century architectural codes, combining classical rigour and discreet ornamentation. The portal, the Tuscan columns and the arches in basket cove testify to a Louis XIII influence, while the turret and the ironworks recall local know-how. Although the sources do not mention a specific sponsor or initial use, its conservation suggests a significant role in the Clermont urban heritage.
