Fronts and roofs of the turret (Box BL 188): inscription by order of 29 September 1981

Origin and history

The Hotel de Rye, located in Dole in the Jura department (39), is an emblematic 16th century monument. This building, registered with the Historical Monuments since 1981, is distinguished by its facades and roofs of the turret, protected by ministerial decree. Its official address, 36 rue du Gouvernement, makes it an architectural landmark in the city centre of Dole, although its approximate GPS location places it sometimes near Avenue Rockefeller.

The construction of the Hotel de Rye dates back to the 16th century, a period marked by the rise of Renaissance architecture in France. This type of private hotel reflects the prestige of bourgeois or aristocratic families of the time, often linked to local political or judicial power. In Dole, the historic city of Franche-Comté, these urban residences played a central role in social and economic life, hosting meetings, ceremonies, or serving as a place of representation for their owners.

The building is now owned by an association, suggesting a contemporary cultural or heritage vocation. Although the sources do not specify its current use (visits, room rental, guest rooms), its status as a Historic Monument and its partial protection (tourelle) make it a key element of the Dolois heritage. The accuracy of its location is assessed as fair (note 5/10), indicating minor uncertainties in its exact location in the geographic databases.
