Origin and history

The Hotel Servan is an iconic building located in Argentan, in the department of Orne, Normandy. Dated from the mid-17th century, it represents a typical example of the civil architecture of this period, with stylistic elements characteristic of the Louis XIII style. The cochère door, particularly remarkable, is decorated with worked patterns and framed by pilasters supporting a pediment.

The cochère door of the Hotel Servin has been listed as a Historic Monument since November 29, 1948. This classification highlights its heritage importance, thanks in particular to its arch in the middle of the hanger and its finely carved vault key. The building, located at 13 rue Ozenne-Pierre, illustrates the local architectural know-how and prestige of the urban residences of the time.

In the historical context of the 17th century, Argentan was a dynamic city, marked by artisanal and commercial activities. Private hotels, such as Servan's, reflected the prosperity of their owners, often notables or merchants. These buildings played an important social role, providing a forum for meetings and exchanges among the local elite.
