Origin and history

The Hotel Soubrany, located in Riom, is an emblematic building of the First Renaissance (16th century), marked by a striking contrast between its richly decorated facade and its modest interior dimensions. The house, with a surface of 40 m2, houses a small-diameter screw staircase, while its Renaissance windows superimposed on the first and second floors reveal a sculpted decor with great finesse. Triangular pilasters, capitals and pediments decorated with martelated masks, foliage and coat of arms (identified as those of the Soubrany family) bear witness to the work of sculptors with varying skills. The oak frame, dated by dendrochronology of 1569, and the 18th century chimney (decorated by false marble) illustrate the architectural evolutions of the building.

The frieze of the lintel, framed with winding staples, represents mythological characters (a man and a woman with vegetal tails) and stylized plant motifs. The triangular pediment, surmounted by candelabras, is home to a shield ascribed to Claude Soubrany, bourgeois merchant and consul of Riom in 1574, likely sponsor. 17th century archives still mention the "house of Mr.Conseil Soubrany", confirming his high social status. The interior fittings of the 18th century, like the painted fireplace, show a continuous occupation, although the classified parts (facades and roofs) protect above all its Renaissance decor, inscribed in 1925 and classified in 1963.

Comparison with the Consuls' house (built 30 years earlier) reveals structural similarities: roof slope, type of frame (rings carrying firm on blocks) and carved motifs. These elements place the Hotel Soubrany in the Renaissance riomois architectural current, where decorative ostentation often masked small spaces. The building, now located 41 rue de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, thus embodies the bourgeois patronage of the period, between social ambition and urban constraints.
