Origin and history
Hotel Subit-Gouyon is a private hotel built between 1930 and 1931 in Saint-Étienne, in the Loire department. Sponsored by pharmacist Hatier, he is the work of architects Armand Subit and Yves Gouyon, who gave him a marked Art Deco style, notably visible in the central hall. The building is also distinguished by a bas-relief adorning its pediment, made by sculptor Joanny Durand.
The monument has been partially protected since 1989, with an inscription in the title of historical monuments covering its facades, terraces, fences, as well as its central space including hall, staircases and window. These elements reflect the architectural elegance of the time and the know-how of local artisans. The hotel illustrates Saint-Étienne's urban heritage, marked by a thriving industrial and commercial bourgeoisie at the beginning of the 20th century.
Although the interior apartments have been redesigned over time, the original decor of the hall remains well preserved, offering a valuable testimony of the Art Deco aesthetic. The building is located at 7 rue de la Richelandière, in an emblematic district of the city, and its architecture is part of the Stéphanois urban landscape, marked by a mix of styles ranging from industrial to luxurious residential.
