Origin and history

The Hotel Terrier de Santans is a mansion built in the 16th century by the Terrier de Santans family, in the commune of Marnay (Haute-Saône). This building illustrates the Renaissance civil architecture of the area, with a two-level facade pierced with sled windows and framed by two forebodys. Its elevation was classified as historic monuments in 1915, recognizing its early heritage value.

In the 20th century, the hotel was transformed into a gendarmerie barracks, marking a radical change in its original function. In 1977, the commune of Marnay became its owner and finally established the town hall in 1989. This monument thus bears witness to the changing uses of historic buildings, from aristocratic residence to public building.

The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its partial classification for the façade by decree of 2 June 1915. Today, a communal property, there remains a remarkable example of the adaptation of historical monuments to contemporary needs, while preserving original architectural elements such as its characteristic mantle windows.
