Origin and history

The Hotel Thomassin, also known as Hotel Boisselet, is a private hotel located 5 rue Salengro in Vesoul, in the Old Vesoul district. Built between 1480 and 1483 by Jacques Thomassin, seigneur of Villeparois and alderman of the jurist Adrien Thomassin, it features a Gothic facade, a polygonal staircase tower and a rectangular dovecote. Its style, typical of the 16th century Franche-Comte, was sometimes mistakenly described as a "Spanish house" in the 19th century.

In the 18th century, access was rethought: a cochère door was pierced to the west, creating an inner courtyard, while the courtyard façade was modernized. Stables, ancient properties of the Ursulines, were added before 1808 to the back of the court. The building changed its name in the 19th century under Joseph Boisselet, which made it a "museum" housing medieval collections inherited from Colonel de Fabert.

A controversial restoration at the beginning of the 20th century "restores" Gothic elements on the facade and removes coatings, while inside, neo-Gothic decorations are created. However, the hotel preserves 18th-century painted panels and canvases, as well as original models. Joined historical monuments in 2008 (after a first protection in 1927, cancelled), it is remarkable for its mix of architectures and its history linked to the Comtian aristocracy.
