Origin and history
Hotel Tixier de Brolac is an emblematic 16th-century building located at 2 rue des Grands-Jours in Clermont-Ferrand, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme. Built in 1587, it is in the immediate vicinity of Notre Dame Cathedral, in the historic heart of the city. This building illustrates the civil architecture of the Renaissance in Auvergne, with decorative elements characteristic of this period.
The entrance to the hotel, classified as historical monuments by order of 8 October 1917, is his most remarkable element. It is surmounted by a sculpted tympanum representing three sheep framing the arms of the Tixier de Brolac family. This family, one of which was a member of Clermont's alderman, marked local history by its political and social influence. The date of 1587, engraved on the door, attests to its seniority and heritage importance.
The building is part of the urban landscape of Clermont-Ferrand, a city in full economic and cultural expansion. At that time, the chevines, municipal magistrates, played a key role in the management of the city, and their homes often reflected their social status. The Hotel Tixier de Brolac thus bears witness to the social organization and power of the local elites under the Ancien Régime.
