Origin and history
The Hotel Verchant, located at 9 rue Rebuffy in Montpellier, is a historical monument whose current construction dates back mainly to the 18th century. This quadrilateral courtyard has a 19th century façade, with a large building body rising on three floors plus a half storey under high. Its portal, adorned with an arch in the middle of a hanger and sculptures (female head in key, split pilasters, triangular pediment), bears witness to remarkable artistic know-how. The scabs are garnished with draperies ending with acorns, and the side consoles are decorated with palmettes and lily flowers.
The house would have belonged to the Roca family in the Middle Ages before being completely rebuilt in 1683 by the Giral and Chassefière masons. This reconstruction was commissioned by Samuel Verchant, who then received the sizes (Royal Tax). The portal on street, including its impost, was classified as Historic Monument by decree of 27 July 1965, highlighting its heritage value. The architecture thus combines baroque elements (sculptures, pediment) with a classical structure, typical of the Languedoc private hotels of the time.
The exact address, 9 rue Rebuffy, square the Hotel Verchant in the historic centre of Montpellier, a city marked by its medieval past and its growth in the 17th and 18th centuries. Although sources mention a "a priori satisfactory" location (note 6/10), no additional details are provided on its current accessibility (visits, accommodation or events). The building illustrates the architectural evolution of the Montpellier bourgeoisie, between medieval heritage and classical modernization.
