Circular arcade door: inscription by order of 2 February 1948

Origin and history

The Hotel in Mantes-la-Jolie is a 17th century monument, typical of the civil architecture of this period in Île-de-France. Its most remarkable element, a circular arcade door, was inscribed under the title of Historical Monuments by order of 2 February 1948. This building reflects the stylistic and urban characteristics of private hotels built under the Ancien Régime, often intended for a local bourgeoisie or nobility ascent.

The location of the Hotel, at 8 rue Bodin (or close by, 6 rue Baudin according to geographical sources), illustrates the urbanization of Mantes-la-Jolie, strategic city at the confluence of the Seine and its commercial axes. At that time, private hotels served as both a residence and a symbol of prestige for their owners, while participating in the structuring of the central neighbourhoods. Their presence attests to the economic and social importance of the city in the Paris region in the 17th century.
