Origin and history

Hotel Zylof de Winde is a historic monument located in Bergues, in the Northern Department. Built around 1785, it is distinguished by its architecture combining brick, limestone and marble, with a slate roof and Flemish tiles. Its posterior elevation includes an additional floor, and its basement is vaulted in cradle. This private hotel reflects the local architectural style of the late eighteenth century, marked by Flemish influence.

The building belonged to a certain Claeys of Walenade-Zylof in the early 19th century. A date engraved on a beam, discovered during recent works, confirms its construction around 1785. Recent transformations have converted the 1st floor and 1st floor into apartments, while dining together. The facades, roofs, and some living rooms on the ground floor have been protected since 1981.

The Zylof Hotel in Winde illustrates the bourgeois heritage of Bergues, a city marked by its Flemish history and commercial role. Its architecture, combining noble materials and local techniques, reflects the prosperity of its owners and the importance of cultural exchanges in the region at that time. Today, there remains a preserved example of 18th-century urban habitat in the Hauts-de-France.
