Origin and history

The Ahun-Lavaveix basin, located in Creuse, is a small but significant mining basin, mainly in the 19th and 20th centuries. This site, centred on the municipalities of Lavaveix-les-Mines and Saint-Médard-la-Rochette, extends 14 km long and 1.5 km wide, bordered by the granite massif of Guéret and crossed by the Creuse River. Its exploitation, first artisanal from the 17th century, became industrial from 1863 with the creation of the Société anonyme des Houillères d'Ahun, which unified the North and South concessions. Unlike most French basins, Ahun's was never nationalised, remaining under private control until its closure in 1969.

The development of coalfields is marked by massive investments in mining and railway infrastructure, such as the Saint-Sulpice-Laurière-Busseau-d'Ahun line opened in 1864, extended to Montluçon and Ussel. In 1868 Lavaveix-les-Mines became an independent municipality to accommodate minors and their families, reaching a population peak of 4,108 in 1876. The company financed public facilities (church, school) and operated up to 60 coke ovens around 1870, with a record extraction of 354,000 tons in 1874. However, productivity declined in the 1880s, despite attempts to modernize.

The decline accelerated in the twentieth century, marked by strikes (1877, 1914, 1927-1928) and the gradual closure of the wells. The North concession ceased operations in 1928, while the South concession closed in 1961, followed by the North mine in 1969. Following the liquidation of the company in 2005, a portion of the buildings were listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments in 2006. Today, the site is valued via an interpretive route and the rehabilitation of workshops in the third place, although mining risks (settlements) persist, managed by a Mining Risk Prevention Plan (MRPP) initiated in 2000.

The Ahun-Lavaveix basin illustrates the Creuse's industrial history, with a fragile and emblematic mining heritage. The remains, partially preserved, bear witness to a time when coal was structuring the local economy, while the local archives and associations (such as the family of buttes) perpetuate this memory. The current management varies between heritage preservation and security issues, reflecting the challenges posed by the legacy of former farms.
