Origin and history
The house at 11 Rue de la Sous-Prefecture in Montbéliard is a building whose origins date back to the late 16th or early 17th century. The building on the street, built during this period, has a new façade in 1827, as evidenced by the date and monogram "PG" engraved above the entrance door. The stairway tower and adjoining façade, pierced by sill windows, also date back to this time, reflecting the typical architecture of the late Renaissance.
In the 19th century, the building underwent modifications, including the addition of a building body on courtyard. In 1985, the house was ravaged by a fire, requiring complete restoration between 1985 and 1986. Some elements, such as the stairway tower with its spiral staircase and the courtyard façade, were classified as Historic Monument by order of 24 July 1986. The street gate, for its part, was inscribed on the same date, highlighting the heritage importance of this building.
The location of the house, in the centre of Montbéliard, a city marked by its industrial history and its preserved architectural heritage, makes it a witness to the urban and stylistic evolutions of the region. Its present condition is the result of both its initial construction and subsequent interventions, particularly after the damage caused by the 1985 fire.
