Origin and history

The house on 14 rue des Croisiers is a civilian building located in the old town centre of Caen, in the Calvados department, Normandy. Built during the third quarter of the seventeenth century, it is a typical example of the domestic architecture of this period in the region. Its pediment, dated precisely 1653, is a remarkable architectural element which led to its inscription as historical monuments.

The official inscription of the house as a historic monument took place on 13 April 1928, by ministerial decree. This protection specifically concerns the 1653 pediment, stressing its heritage importance. The location of the building, in the heart of the historical Caen, reinforces its interest in the urban landscape, marked by centuries of history and architectural transformations.

At the time of its construction, Caen was a dynamic city, marked by its administrative, religious and commercial role in Lower Normandy. Bourgeois houses like this reflected the prosperity of their owners, often merchants, notables or officers. These buildings, with their decorated facades, bear witness to the influence of emerging classical styles, while integrating traditional local elements.
