Origin and history
The house of 2 rue Honoré-de-Balzac is a mansion located in the fortified town of Guérande, in the Loire-Atlantique. This building, dated from the seventeenth century, illustrates the civil architecture of this period in an area marked by maritime commerce and Breton influence. Its listing of historic monuments in 1966 highlights its heritage interest, particularly in its facades, roofs and interior staircase.
Guérande, a medieval town surrounded by ramparts, was in the 17th century a dynamic economic center, drawn by salt production and trade with the Atlantic. Private hotels, such as the Honoré-de-Balzac street, reflected the prosperity of local elites, often merchants or notables. These urban residences, combining comfort and social representation, played a key role in the social and administrative life of the city.
Their preservation today offers a tangible testimony to this flourishing past.
