Origin and history
The house at 7 Rue Saint-Mathieu in Quimper is an emblematic building of Breton architectural heritage. Built in the 16th century, it is distinguished by its stone façade, typical of bourgeois or artisanal houses of this period. This building integrates into the old quarter of Quimper, reflecting urban planning and Renaissance construction techniques in Brittany.
Classified as a Historic Monument, this house was partially protected by decree of 22 May 1956, specifically covering its street façade and the corresponding roof slope. This official recognition underlines its importance in the urban landscape of Quimper, a city marked by its medieval history and subsequent development. The precise location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10), remains a point of interest for studies on ancient habitat in Brittany.
The Saint-Mathieu neighbourhood, where this house is located, illustrates the social and economic evolution of Quimper in the 16th and 17th centuries. At that time, the city, then an administrative and commercial centre of Finistère, saw the co-existence of artisans, merchants and notables. Stone houses, like this one, often served as a place of life, work (shops or workshops on the ground floor) and social representation. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the lifestyles and spatial organization of the era.
