Origin and history
The house located at 12 rue Félix-Mathé in Moulins (Allier) is an emblematic 16th-century building, integrated into the former marinater district. Its alleyways, leading to the Allier docks, reflect the historic river activity of the city. The façade on the rue de l'Eperon is distinguished by a door adorned with doric pilasters and a protruding cornice, while the one on the rue Félix-Mathé features rectangular windows framed with limestone and sandstone bands.
Built in brick with stone frames, this house illustrates the local architectural techniques of the Renaissance. It was partially listed as historical monuments on 24 July 1972, protecting its facades and roofs, including the return to the rue de l'Eperon. This ranking underlines its heritage importance in the urban landscape of Moulins.
The marinater district, of which this building is part, bears witness to the river economy that led Moulins in the 16th century. The Allier wharves were then used as a hub for the transport of goods, and the surrounding houses were home to artisans and traders associated with this activity. The architecture of the house, combining brick and stone, reflects this period of prosperity and cultural exchange.
