Facade and roof on street: inscription by decree of 21 July 1947

Origin and history

The house at 19 rue de l'Embergue in Rodez is a remarkable example of medieval civil architecture. Its ground floor in masonry supports two floors in wooden strips, a technique of construction common in the area at that time. The facade, protected since 1947, has an open balcony on its left, a decorative and functional element characteristic of bourgeois houses in the city.

The building was inscribed under the title of Historical Monuments by order of 21 July 1947, a recognition that specifically concerns its facade and roof on street. This protection reflects the heritage importance of this type of construction in the historic centre of Rodez, where half-timbered houses illustrate urban development in the 14th and 15th centuries. The exact address, confirmed by the Merimée bases and GPS coordinates, places this monument in an emblematic part of the city, close to the cathedral.

The location of the house, although noted as 'passable' (level 5/10) in the databases, allows to situate its construction in the wider context of the urbanization of Rodez. In medieval times, this city was a major commercial and religious crossroads in Rouergue, a region now integrated into Occitanie. Wood-paned houses were used as both a dwelling, a workshop and a place of exchange for local artisans and merchants.
