Origin and history
The house at 12 rue de l'Ail in Strasbourg was a historic monument of the first half of the 18th century. This building, now destroyed, was distinguished by its typical civil architecture of the time, with facades, a roof and a staircase protected by ministerial decree. Its inscription in 1929 reflected its heritage value in the Strasbourg landscape.
The building was located in the historic centre of Strasbourg, a city marked by its Alsatian heritage and its major commercial role since the Middle Ages. The houses of this period often reflected the prosperity of the local merchants and artisans, with worky facades and decorative elements characteristic of the Rhine baroque style. Although destroyed, this house illustrates the urban evolution of Strasbourg before modern transformations.
The sheltered elements of the house (façades, door vantals, roof and staircase) suggest a neat construction, probably intended for an affluent family or an influential artisan. The inscription in the title of historical monuments in 1929 highlighted its importance as a witness to the 18th century Strasbourg's domestic architecture, a time when the city was under French influence after its attachment in 1681.
