Portal of the 18S with its vantals: registration by decree of 13 March 1953
Origin and history
The house located at 17 rue de l'Ail in Strasbourg is an 18th century building, representative of the civil architecture of this period in the Alsatian region. Originally built as a bourgeois dwelling, it was partially destroyed during the 1944 bombings, which ravaged part of the city during the Second World War. Only the frame of the gate, a remarkable architectural element, could be preserved and moved into the courtyard of the later rebuilt building.
The portal, classified as historical monuments by order of 13 March 1953, is today the last vestige of this house. Its inscription reflects the heritage importance of this element, typical of the monumental entrances of the 18th century Strasbourg houses. Although the original building has disappeared, this portal offers a material testimony to the urban and architectural history of Strasbourg, marked by the destruction of the war and efforts to preserve the heritage.
The location of this monument, in the historic district of Strasbourg, highlights its integration into an urban fabric rich in old buildings. The street of the Ail, located in the city centre, concentrates several buildings of heritage value, reflecting the architectural and social evolution of the city since the Middle Ages. The 17 rue de l'Ail portal, although not well located, remains a point of interest for history and architecture lovers, illustrating both the fragility and the resilience of the Strasbourg heritage.
