The ancient statue of Saint-Christophe and its surrounding niche on the exterior façade: inscription by decree of 17 September 1937
Origin and history
The house in Boulbon, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, is a 13th and 14th century building. It is classified as Historical Monument, although architectural details or its original use are not specified in the available sources. The most remarkable element of this house is the niche housing an ancient statue of Saint Christophe, located on its exterior facade. This statue and its niche were officially protected by decree of 17 September 1937.
The medieval houses of this period in Provence were often built of stone, reflecting local techniques and materials. They generally served as homes for families or artisans, while sometimes playing a role in community or religious life, as evidenced here by the presence of the statue of St.Christophus, the patron saint of travellers. The location of Boulbon, close to the traffic axes of the time, could explain this particular devotion.
The accuracy of the location of this monument is considered "passable" (note 5/10), and its approximate address is indicated as being at 29 Grand-Rue in Boulbon. No additional information is available on its access to the public, current use or possible restorations. Sources are limited to Monumentum data and the administrative references of the Merimée database.
