Origin and history

The Maison des Masques, or Maison des Quatre-Saisons, is a civil building built in the first half of the 18th century in Saint-Denis, Île-de-France. In 1740 the archives of the cens of the city mentioned this newly built house, then owned by Louis David. The building, described as a functional complex, includes two shops on the ground floor, a staircase, upstairs housing, and an attic. Its architecture is distinguished by decorative elements, including an in-soil with curved bays adorned with carved staples.

The four windows on the first floor are surmounted by mascarons, representing three female faces and one male, hence its nickname "House of Masks". These carved elements, typical of the rock style emerge at this time, underline the ornamental character of the facade. The house thus illustrates the evolution of urban constructions in the 18th century, mixing commercial utility and refined aesthetics.

The House of Masks was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 25 January 2006, recognizing its heritage value. Today owned by the commune of Saint-Denis, it is located at 46 rue de la Boulangerie. Its state of conservation and its location make it a notable architectural testimony of this period, although the available sources do not specify its current use (visit, rental, etc.).
