Origin and history
The 18th century house of the rue des Huit-Patriotes in Paimpol is an example of Breton civil architecture of that time. It retains its original floors and ground floor, with a balcony overlooking the entrances and ground frames at the openings. Floors, highlighted by cords, and angle chains reinforce its structure, reflecting the know-how of local artisans.
This residence is representative of the shipowners' homes that flourished in Paimpol in the 18th century, when the city was an active port linked to fishing and maritime trade. Its partial inscription in historic monuments in 1964 (façades on the rue des Huit-Patriotes and the Place du Martray) bears witness to its heritage value, preserving a part of the urban and social history of coastal Brittany.
Architectural elements, such as harp chains and strings marking the levels, illustrate the construction techniques of the era. These details, combined with its central location, make it an emblematic monument of the Paimpola heritage, linked to the region's maritime economic boom.
Official registration by decree of 7 August 1964 specifically covers facades, thus protecting their visual integrity. This measure is part of a broader desire to safeguard the physical traces of port activities and the way of life of local elites, such as shipowners, whose homes still punctuate the historic centre of Paimpol.
