Origin and history
The house in Uzès, dating from the 18th century, is a historical monument whose facade was rebuilt or remodeled during this period, probably in 1733 by its owner of the time. It is distinguished by a two-storey architecture with ground floor and a half-storey, where the second floor windows feature wrought iron balconies. These decorative elements, of great finesse, include S and C volutes, decorated with foliage or interlaced around a corrugated central stem, reflecting the artisanal know-how of the period.
The balconies have a remarkable symmetry: each grid has a large central panel and two side balusters, with dissymmetric patterns but identically reproduced on each side. Another notable architectural detail, supplemented by grids whose fillings recall the motifs of the volutes, is the moulded, double-inflection stone. These stylistic features illustrate the influence of 18th century artistic currents, where metal ornamentation played a key role in the beautification of urban facades.
Classified as a Historic Monument since 1954, this house specifically protects its facade on street, the two wrought iron grilles of balconies on the second floor, as well as the corresponding roof. Its exact address, 20 rue Jacques-d'Uzès, and its inscription to the heritage underline its importance in the historical fabric of Uzès, a city marked by a rich architectural heritage in Languedoc-Roussillon (today Occitanie).
